Project Overview
S2 Global approached our team to fully redesign their screening and inspection platform, CertScan, with the goal of reaffirming its position as an industry frontrunner. In my capacity as the project and design lead, I played a pivotal role in shaping a system that not only enhances operational efficiency and facilitates confident decision-making but also seamlessly accommodates the varied user base and a spectrum of inspection scenarios inherent to CertScan.
CertScan is a comprehensive security operations software that seamlessly integrates a network of digital data and access points into a singular cohesive system. The system monitors packages, vehicles, parcels, cargo, and vehicles at crossings around the world.
What is CertScan?
What made this project unique?
Systems that operate in high-stakes environments require special considerations such as cognitive load, actionable connections in the data, and environmental factors. On top of that, security is no longer just one lane, one person, or one machine. The new design had to account for 5 different user types, each with individual needs and workflows, as well as multiple use case environments across an international user base.
UX Philosophy
-
Zeroed-In
Providing a role-based UI for each user type that is optimized for their tasks allows them to efficiently get their job done without distractions or cognitive overload.
-
Adaptable
The design’s framework needed to adapt to the different user needs and device types, with scalability at the forefront for future feature additions and longevity.
-
Guided
The system needed to seamlessly lead users through finding the right tasks and information at the optimal time within their workflows.
Final Design
The new CertScan is an action-oriented system that is built to scale across both business and user needs. The final design surfaces connections across data points, increasing efficiency and allowing users to make confident decisions. Optimized workflows for users with varying needs and roles was a fundamental element for a successful design
Analyst Workflow
Analysts are in charge of conducting [visual] inspections and determining if the object is suspect, irregular, or non-suspect. These users need to be able to follow correct procedures, make accurate decisions, and pay attention to detail while being critical and focused.
Supervisor Workflow
Supervisors manage and monitor inspection activity and ensure equipment is running smoothly. They frequently monitor overall progress to mitigate inspection bottlenecks or equipment issues. Their day-to-day can be fast-paced and stressful, making it critical that they can work efficiently and quickly identify any immediate actions that need to be taken.
Oversight Workflow
Operational Oversight roles run massive protocol-abiding operations typically across multiple ports and equipment types. These users need to ensure all operations are running efficiently and therefore have to be able to identify issues right away. Dynamic visualizations help show varying levels of detail in actionable formats.
“I’m impressed and in awe about how much work and thought you’ve put into this design and how much information you’re giving us. This is the first time I’ve ever seen somebody really put something together and give us so much information at our fingertips. We really appreciate it that somebody actually cares about our job and is putting their time to help us, it means the world to us.”
